This is something I always use. Almost daily as a matter of fact. The story started when someone brought me an Emachines netbook. The hard drive died and they didn’t have the money for a new drive. This would have been around 80 bucks or so on Ebay. So now what? I use it at work, but I run the whole operating system from a USB drive that has what is called Puppy Linux.
You should try this one day. It is the most simple thing to do! Below I will show you the links to get the files needed. Again, this is SO SIMPLE anyone can do it. For those who cannot stand to be off the internet for more than a minute due to a hard drive failure this is for you. Or maybe you are ‘on the go’ and have access to another PC. You can use your thumb drive on that PC and you are all set.
I guess I should mention that Puppy Linux is just that. It is NOT windows. Although there are some similarities such as web browsing, this operating system is meant to be simple even for the person who never used the Linux operating system.
OK. So here are 2 links you can check out. The first one is the installer program. The second one is the main Puppy Linux file. Download both. Run the smaller install file first. When you do that it will ask you for the other file you downloaded. The only question you will be asked is what the drive letter is of your USB thumbnail drive. Also note that the drive should be the ONLY thing you will keep on this drive!
